Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old athlete, has set his sights on being selected for the HSBC Sevens World Series in 2025. He aspires to join head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man squad for the upcoming tournaments next year, following his debut in the 2023 Dubai Sevens – a significant milestone in his rugby career after participating in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that year.
Kabu acknowledges the dedication and effort required to be part of the extended national team squad, referring to it as a major accomplishment. He expressed that playing alongside the best players in the national setup is a dream for many young rugby players and he hopes for another opportunity to showcase his talent in future legs of the series. Additionally, Kabu aims to secure an overseas contract to enhance his professional career.
Starting his rugby journey with the Natakali Sharks, Kabu progressed through Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship before playing for the Police Blues sevens side. He credits senior players in the squad, such as Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, for their guidance and support. As a former admirer of assistant coach Viliame Satala, Kabu is grateful to have received mentorship from him as well.
Kabu has learned valuable lessons about discipline from experienced players and aspires to inspire the next generation of rugby players through his experiences. Meanwhile, the national sevens squad has resumed their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) after the Christmas break and will regroup for training next week. Kolinisau will announce his team for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, taking place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, followed by the Perth Sevens scheduled for January 24-26.
With determination and hard work, Kabu’s aspirations reflect the spirit and dedication that characterize the sport, and his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere.
