Rugby World Cup Woes: Fiji Captain Calls for Accountability

Waisea Nayacalevu, the captain of the Flying Fijians for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, has stated that the team has not received any communication from the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) amid ongoing concerns regarding alleged mismanagement within the organization.

More than a week has passed since the issues surfaced, and Nayacalevu revealed that efforts to connect with the FRU have been unproductive. In a live podcast conversation with social media influencer Lesi Vanuavou, he mentioned his attempt to contact FRU Trust Board Chairman Peter Mazey, who initially agreed to arrange a meeting between senior players and the FRU. However, Mazey later became unavailable, and since then, no further outreach has occurred.

“We need to talk and address the issues,” Nayacalevu emphasized, calling for a thorough cleanup and greater accountability within the union. He also noted that emails have been dispatched to the FRU concerning unpaid salaries for matches played against the Barbarians, Georgia, and the All Blacks earlier in the year.
