Holy Trinity Primary School recently participated in the Get Into Rugby Plus Festival, a dedicated event for primary schools showcasing budding rugby talent, held at Bidesi Ground in Laucala Bay, Suva. This event aimed to not only celebrate sports but also emphasize core values through rugby.
Ana Sorovi, the school’s GIR Plus coach, expressed excitement about the opportunity for both the students and their parents to engage in this new experience. “We’re looking forward to attending this festival; it’s something new for them and even for parents,” Sorovi stated. She emphasized that the event wasn’t merely a competition but a chance for participants to learn and demonstrate important rugby rules and principles, known as the DRIPS rules, which stand for Discipline, Respect, Integrity, Passion, and Solidarity. These values are integral to the GIR Plus program, which seeks to merge sports with personal development.
Sorovi noted that the team had prepared by integrating approximately 16 essential skill sets into their training, equipping players for both competitive and personal growth on and off the field.
Though matches were interrupted due to heavy rain, Holy Trinity and other schools left the event with commemorative trophies, marking their participation in this enriching experience.
In summary, the festival provided a valuable platform for young athletes to learn life skills and sportsmanship through rugby, fostering community spirit and resilience among the students. The focus on character development, alongside sporting ability, speaks to a hopeful future where sports play an essential role in shaping well-rounded individuals.
