Rugby Turmoil: Officials Clash Sparks Call for Independence

After a recent incident at the Kadavu Rugby Union’s Southern Rally, Nakasaleka rugby head coach Vilikesa Vulakauvaki has taken responsibility for the events that unfolded due to interference from officials. Nakasaleka participated with two teams in the senior division and one team in the under-19 category.

Vulakauvaki expressed concerns about the “vakavanua” mentality leading to significant issues, suggesting that if Nakasaleka officials moved away from this mindset, the problems could have been avoided. He stated that on the second morning of the tournament, officials informed him that Nakasaleka One had to forfeit their semi-final match against Nakasaleka Two. Additionally, these officials approached the organizers to declare the under-19 team as champions, as they had topped the round-robin stage, a decision that was not well received by the other teams, leading some to leave the venue.

Vulakauvaki emphasized the need for clarity and respect among the players and officials, noting that the officials had approached the top team twice regarding the forfeiture while the players prepared to leave. He expressed a desire for the growth of the sport, criticizing the attitude of officials which could dampen the aspirations of players wanting to represent their region.

In response, Kadavu Rugby Union vice-president Rusiate Wadali backed Vulakauvaki’s call for the sport to operate independently. He characterized the incident as a minor issue and insisted on the need to separate the union from traditional influences to ensure progress. Wadali announced plans to present their strategies at an upcoming meeting with the Kadavu Provincial office to solidify their vision for rugby’s future in Kadavu while advocating for reconciliation among chiefs and club officials.

He also communicated the importance of respecting the distinction between traditional practices and the governance of the sport, urging that rugby should remain independent from outside interference. At the meeting, they plan to introduce their extended squad and discuss future steps for the sport’s development.
