Rugby Turmoil: Calls for Independence Amid Controversy

Nakasaleka rugby head coach Vilikesa Vulakauvaki has accepted responsibility for recent issues arising from officials’ interference during the Kadavu Rugby Union’s Southern Rally. He explained that Nakasaleka had entered two teams in the senior category and one in the under-19 division. Vulakauvaki expressed concerns about the “vakavanua style” leading to conflicts, noting that discussions have emerged regarding other teams contemplating leaving the competition due to the actions of Nakasaleka’s officials.

Vulakauvaki detailed an incident on the second morning of the tournament where Nakasaleka officials informed him that Nakasaleka One would forfeit their semi-final match against Nakasaleka Two. Furthermore, these officials approached the event organizers to declare their under-19 team as champions based on their performance in the round-robin format, a decision that was met with disapproval from other teams.

He emphasized the need for Nakasaleka rugby officials to abandon the traditional mentality that hinders the sport’s growth. Vulakauvaki remarked on the importance of clear communication, stating that officials approached the top team even after they had expressed their intention to withdraw from the match, resulting in frustration as players were preparing to leave.

Seeking to foster the development of rugby, he stressed that such attitudes from officials threaten the aspirations of players wishing to represent their region. In support of Vulakauvaki, Kadavu Rugby Union vice-president Rusiate Wadali called for the sport to be managed independently from traditional influences. He reiterated that while the recent events may seem minor, they could jeopardize progress if not addressed.

Wadali highlighted the importance of separating rugby governance from traditional leadership and confirmed that they would present their structured plan to the Kadavu Provincial office at an upcoming meeting. He also indicated the necessity for reconciliation among chiefs and club officials, emphasizing that the future of rugby in Kadavu must be independent and free from external interference.
