The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) have joined forces with the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) in a significant initiative aimed at reducing road accidents and fatalities throughout Fiji. LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted that the collaboration focuses on increasing compliance with road safety and traffic regulations among Fijian road users, leveraging the considerable influence of rugby players and the expansive reach of the FRU’s platform.
“This innovative partnership acknowledges the essential role of sports, particularly rugby, in shaping behaviors and attitudes in Fiji,” Rokosawa stated, emphasizing the respect and admiration rugby players command in the nation. This recognition positions them as effective advocates for responsible road use.
The three organizations—the LTA, ACCF, and FRU—have committed to working together for the next four years to harness the power of sports in promoting a culture of road safety awareness and responsibility. “Rugby is a unifying force in Fiji, and the influence of players goes beyond the sports field. Through this partnership with FRU, we are sending a clear message that road safety is a shared responsibility,” said Rokosawa.
Avnil Pratap, General Manager for Commercial, Broadcast & Marketing at FRU, echoed these sentiments, noting the union’s dedication to the well-being of Fijians inside and outside the sports arena. “Rugby players serve as role models in our communities, and their voices hold significant influence. We aspire to inspire positive behavior and encourage everyone to prioritize safety on the roads,” Pratap remarked.
This partnership represents a hopeful and proactive approach to tackling road safety in Fiji, showcasing how the passion for rugby can be channeled into a critical social issue. By engaging the community through sports, the initiative aims not only to raise awareness but also to foster a culture of responsibility that could lead to safer roads for all Fijians.
