2024 Olympic silver medalists Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada are shifting their focus from the rugby pitch to leadership as they join the Fijian Drua 7s at the upcoming Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s tournament. Despite their ongoing rehabilitation, the duo has been appointed to coach their teammates, marking an exciting new chapter in their careers.
With a solid squad surrounding them, led by captain Tuidraki Samusamuvodre and including experienced players such as Joseva Tamani, Kemu Valetini, Epeli Momo, and Ilaisa Droasese, the Drua team looks poised to make a significant impact at the tournament.
Baden Stephenson, the General Manager of Fijian Drua, expressed enthusiasm about participating in the Mataso 7s. He emphasized that this event would not only help build the players’ experience but also provide them with the opportunity to enjoy competitive play against talented local teams.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Masi and Stino to explore coaching, contributing to their personal growth while recovering from injury.” Stephenson noted. “Personal development is a vital part of our focus, and both Masi and Stino are eager to share their 7s expertise with the team.”
The Mataso 7s will commence tomorrow at Churchill Park in Lautoka, promising a thrilling event filled with potential for both the players and the coaching duo.
The junior players of the Fijian Drua will have the chance to learn from experienced Olympians, and this unique setup can pave the way for the future of rugby in Fiji by fostering a strong team dynamic and promoting the importance of mentorship in sports. This transition can inspire others in the field to recognize the value of sharing knowledge and experiences, ultimately leading to the growth of the sport.
