Maika Ratuvere, an 18-year-old fullback from Bagata, Cakaudrove, has big dreams both on and off the rugby field. After recently celebrating victory with the Queen Victoria School (QVS) Under-18 team, which secured the esteemed Deans trophy, Ratuvere is keen on following a career in medicine as a nurse or health inspector after his rugby days.
Participating in the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament, Ratuvere sought to evaluate his fitness level post-Deans competition. He believes QVS was the right place for him to gain independence and embrace a strong sense of camaraderie amongst his peers.
Having played rugby since his early years with teams such as Nasinu and Tailevu, Ratuvere’s passion for the sport is evident. He also diversified his athletic skills by playing rugby league as a halfback for the U15 school team, nurturing his competitive spirit since his time at St Joseph the Worker Primary School in Nakasi.
Despite facing injuries during his rugby career, Ratuvere emphasizes the importance of discipline and versatility in balancing sports and academics. He acknowledges the challenges that come with this balance but remains committed to giving his best.
The young athlete’s journey reflects a spirit of resilience and ambition, showing that dreams in sports can coexist with aspirations in healthcare. As he trains hard to enhance his fitness and looks for job opportunities during the holidays, Ratuvere’s commitment could serve as an inspiration for many young athletes, illustrating that with hard work, one can pursue multiple passions simultaneously.
Ratuvere’s story is a reminder of the importance of nurturing both talent and education, paving the way for a fulfilling future — whether in rugby or medicine.
