Maika Ratuvere, the talented fullback who led the Under-18 Deans team to victory, is not only focused on his rugby career but also has aspirations in the medical field. At just 18 years old, this ambitious young man from Bagata, Cakaudrove, dreams of becoming either a nurse or a health inspector as a backup career after his rugby endeavors.
Recently, Ratuvere showcased his skills as he represented the Queen Victoria School (QVS) old boys’ Under-19 team at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. His journey in rugby began with the Kaji rugby competitions, playing for the Nasinu and Tailevu teams, and he also has experience in rugby league as a halfback for his school’s U15 team.
Expressing his passion for the sport, Ratuvere noted, “I enjoy playing rugby with passion to showcase my talent.” He understands the importance of balancing athletics with academics, stating, “It’s a bit of a challenge to juggle the two but I try my best to control it.” His experience with injuries has only strengthened his determination, as he continues to train and improve his fitness.
Despite setbacks, including being dropped from the U18 Fiji Secondary school extended squad due to injury, Ratuvere’s dedication to both rugby and his studies remains strong. He has learned invaluable lessons in discipline and teamwork, emphasizing the close-knit bond he shares with his teammates on and off the field.
Looking ahead, Ratuvere is preparing for future challenges, actively seeking a holiday job while also training to enhance his rugby performance. With his dual focus on sport and health care, he embodies a hopeful narrative of ambition and resilience.
