Rugby Rivals Reunite: Tonga vs Fiji in a Centenary Clash

The Pacific Nations Cup match today between the ‘Ikale Tahi of Tonga and the Flying Fijians marks a significant milestone, celebrating 100 years of Test rugby between the two nations. Fiji and Tonga have a rich history, having first faced each other in 1924, and this weekend’s encounter will be the 95th Test match between them.

The Flying Fijians arrived in Tonga on Wednesday, while the Tongans returned from Apia over the weekend. Both teams are preparing to compete for top positions in the Pacific pool, with the Tonga Rugby Union (TRU) and the Fijian community in Tonga expressing optimism about the upcoming match.

TRU chief executive Aisea ‘Aholelei highlighted the importance of this event, particularly in light of the centennial celebration. He emphasized the preparations being made to ensure a successful game, noting that it is a significant occasion for Tonga and a rare opportunity to host the Flying Fijians, who have not visited in nearly seven years.

Jokini Sivo, president of the Fijian community in Tonga, mentioned that they are excited to welcome the team with a traditional ‘sevusevu’ kava ceremony. Close to 400 Fijians in Nuku’alofa are eager to watch their national team play, and Sivo expressed a mix of emotions, excitement, and anticipation leading up to the match.

Both teams have adequately prepared, and Sivo predicts a close contest, recognizing the historical ties between Fiji and Tonga. TRU’s ‘Aholelei acknowledged that the Flying Fijians are the favorites, as they recently defeated Manu Samoa, while Tonga is looking for a win to remain competitive in the Pacific pool.

The game will be a challenging clash for both sides, with the top two teams advancing to the semi-finals in Tokyo next weekend. ‘Aholelei stressed that Tonga is in a rebuilding phase with a new coaching staff and players, hoping to improve their performance. Crown Prince Tupouto’a of Tonga will be in attendance, as the two teams kick off their match at 3 PM local time, expecting a lively crowd at Te’ufaiva. Meanwhile, Japan and the USA will compete in the Asia Pool decider, both teams having qualified for the semi-finals.
