The Fiji Bitter Lomaiviti and Mataso 7s tournaments were officially launched at the head office of Paradise Beverages Fiji Ltd in Walu Bay, Suva, marking an important step in promoting local rugby talent. The launch event featured the signing of sponsorship documents, attended by officials and members of the media.
Mark Spencer, the general manager of Paradise Beverages Fiji Ltd, expressed enthusiasm for supporting local sports initiatives. He stated, “Together with the tournament’s organizers, we’re committed to nurturing local rugby talent, creating opportunities, and supporting initiatives that have a meaningful impact.”
Isoa Lala, president of the Yalovata Rugby Club, which is organizing the Lomaiviti 7s, highlighted Fiji Bitter’s contributions to the community, including the installation of 23 new streetlights. He noted that the tournament’s backing would also help set the groundwork for constructing two new bridges.
Meanwhile, James Vunituraga, speaking for the Mataso Nakorovou Rugby Club, expressed gratitude for the support from Fiji Bitter. He mentioned the dedication of the organizers in promoting the Mataso 7s and emphasized the goal of building a new bridge to improve access for nearby communities during adverse weather conditions. This initiative gained attention after a video went viral showing students navigating a river during inclement weather.
The upcoming Mataso 7s tournament is scheduled for November 15-17 at Nadovu Park, Lautoka, while the Lomaiviti 7s will take place from November 21-23 at Nasau Park on Ovalau Island.
In summary, these tournaments not only promise to showcase rugby talent but also aim to uplift local communities through infrastructure development. The support from sponsors like Fiji Bitter underscores the importance of community involvement in sports and development efforts in Fiji. This collaboration fosters hope for a brighter future for local athletes and enhances the quality of life in their communities.
