Rugby League Fever: What to Expect from the Pacific Bowl Championship!

Rugby league enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement as the Pacific Rugby League Bowl Championship approaches. The opening match will feature the Vodafone Fiji Bati squaring off against the Papua New Guinea Kumuls, generating a great deal of anticipation.

A welcoming ceremony was held at the Grand Pacific Hotel on Tuesday, where the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, delivered an uplifting speech emphasizing the event’s importance for the Pacific Rugby League community. He noted that the championship brings together elite athletes from various island nations to compete for honor and recognition.

Saukuru also expressed his enthusiasm about co-hosting the Pacific Test Championship in 2024. “As the co-host country for the Pacific Test Championship 2024, it is indeed a great honor. I extend a warm welcome to our distinguished guests, esteemed colleagues, and a special welcome to the teams from Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Tonga, and Samoa,” he stated.

He underscored the significance of the event for the Pacific Rugby Community, highlighting the competition between top-tier men and women’s teams. The minister called the championship a celebration of the dedication and effort put forth by players and their supportive families and communities.

“As someone who is passionate about youth and sports, I am thrilled to share this moment with you,” Saukuru added. He praised the Fiji National Rugby League for its remarkable growth in the sport and emphasized that the Pacific Bowl Championship is an excellent opportunity to showcase the skills and enthusiasm of local athletes.

Saukuru extended his gratitude to all participating teams for coming to Fiji and wished them success in their upcoming matches. The Fiji Bati will take on the PNG Kumuls at 8pm on Saturday at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
