Safeguarding within the sports sector must be elevated as a critical priority to tackle abuse and foster safer environments, according to Tirani Uluinakauvadra, Participation and Pathway Manager for Oceania Rugby. His comments followed the TEAM UP Regional Safeguarding Workshop held at Tanoa International Hotel.
Uluinakauvadra emphasized the importance of adopting proactive approaches in rugby and other sports. “Safeguarding is often overlooked as many focus primarily on the game itself. However, given the numerous issues that have emerged, our goal is to be proactive rather than reactive,” he stated.
He highlighted the troubling reality of abuse in sports, asserting that enhancing education and awareness is essential for individuals to navigate existing support systems in their respective countries. “Abuse does occur in sports, and the core problem is often a lack of awareness. Many do not fully grasp the available support services,” he added.
When discussing the responsibilities of sports administrators, Uluinakauvadra underlined that meaningful change must originate from governance leaders. “Transformation is far more achievable when it is initiated at the top. It is crucial for governance and administration figures to advocate for the creation of a secure environment for all involved in sports,” he explained.
The workshop successfully convened athletes and administrators from across the region, fostering dialogue on effective mechanisms for safeguarding in sports. Uluinakauvadra’s insights signify Oceania Rugby’s dedication to confronting safeguarding challenges directly, ensuring that sports serve as a safe and nurturing space for all participants.
This commitment not only aims to protect individuals but also to enhance the overall integrity of sports. The collective effort highlights that a safe sporting environment is integral for the growth and enjoyment of the game, inspiring hope for a future where trust and safety are paramount in all sports activities.
In summary, as safeguarding becomes a priority in sports, there is optimism that the landscape will shift toward enhanced protection and support for all athletes, creating a healthier sporting community.
