Tomasi Katonivualiku, the head coach of the Senikakala Amazons rugby team, praised the Fiji Sports Council’s under-20 sevens tournament as a crucial opportunity for young female athletes in rugby. Despite his team’s defeat to Lilian Amazon in the final with a score of 5-12 at Thomson Park in Navua, Katonivualiku emphasized the tournament’s role in fostering talent and passion among the players.
With only two weeks to prepare and many of the girls competing in a sevens tournament for the first time, Katonivualiku noted the remarkable potential within his squad, including two standout players who previously participated in the Bulikula team. He emphasized that the genuine passion for rugby among the girls was key to their performance.
Katonivualiku articulated the importance of the under-20 sevens competition as a vital stepping stone for the players’ long-term development in the sport. He remarked on how this initiative creates a supportive progression for young female athletes, starting from school competitions to larger events like Ranadi and Raluve.
