Peceli Rinakama, the president of the Naitasiri Rugby Union, has voiced his frustration regarding the ongoing issues between the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and senior players of the Flying Fijians. In a recent interview, Rinakama discussed concerns raised by Flying Fijians captain Waisea Nayacalevu and other athletes over unpaid contracts, broken promises, and outstanding payments owed to coaches and officials.
Rinakama expressed his disappointment about reports that players have not been properly compensated by the FRU. He urged the Government to step in and address the situation, emphasizing the importance of high-level intervention for the betterment of rugby in Fiji. “It’s crucial that the Prime Minister, the Minister for Sports, and the Government get involved,” he stated, highlighting the significant role they play in rugby’s administration.
He further stressed that government involvement was vital, considering rugby’s influence in enhancing Fiji’s international standing. Rinakama also mentioned that he personally appealed to the Prime Minister for assistance in resolving the issues facing the FRU, characterizing rugby as a national sport that has put Fiji on the global stage.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka remarked that any claims of fund mismanagement related to rugby players should be presented during the FRU’s Annual General Meeting for further investigation. He reiterated that the Government would not interfere in the matter, respecting the FRU’s decision to maintain autonomy.
Rinakama expressed concern that the current situation might discourage future players from pursuing spots on the national team, noting that rugby, which was once played for enjoyment, has become a livelihood for both domestic and overseas players.
He also called upon all rugby unions to collaborate in preparation for the upcoming FRU Annual General Meeting scheduled for November.
