Vatulele, a picturesque island off Fiji’s Coral Coast, is renowned for its endemic red prawns and beautifully intricate masi designs integral to iTaukei culture. Recently, the island hosted the Vatulele 7s, a two-day rugby tournament, on December 19-20, held at the Vatulele District School ground in the village of Ekubu. This year marked the third time the tournament was held locally, allowing residents to enjoy thrilling rugby matches.
The tournament was initiated by community leaders Vilive Qionikorolevu and Asesela Naborisi, who aimed to give back to their village by funding a new walkway for the district school. They took charge of the organization, with Qionikorolevu acting as director and Naborisi as treasurer.
Teams traveled to Vatulele aboard fiberglass boats from Korolevu, facing a challenging boat ride due to rough seas on a notably overcast day. Upon arrival, the welcoming local families showcased the renowned Fijian hospitality.
The tournament kicked off on a sunny morning with some teams unable to participate, leading to a unique competition structure. Elimination matches quickly followed, with teams striving for advancement to the quarter-finals.
The excitement reached a peak on the final day, December 20, as the teams fought fiercely for victory. The TEMC Warriors, coached by former national 7s representative Semi Kunatani, ultimately triumphed, defeating Gold Coast Senibiau 34-5 in the cup final. Other teams, such as Naboutini and Hydro Bukuya, also celebrated their respective victories in the shield and bowl categories.
Participants reflected on the lessons of gratitude and community strength derived from the experience, highlighting how the simple joys of island life often go unappreciated in urban areas. With plans for the tournament to return in August next year, this year’s event underscored the village’s strong communal spirit and commitment to fostering youth involvement.
As the tournament concluded and attendees prepared to depart, the fond memories and connections made in Vatulele were a testament to the power of community and the enriching experience of coming together for a shared cause.
