A rugby club in Labasa is offering its players opportunities that extend beyond the sport itself. Bokobuka, the rugby team affiliated with the National Fire Authority, is actively assisting its athletes in securing employment and contracts for overseas play.
Viliame Maiono, the club’s coach, highlighted that this initiative is designed to help players advance their careers not only in rugby but in other areas of their lives as well. One player has already gained a position with a club in Australia, while eight others have found jobs as auxiliary staff with the National Fire Authority.
Maiono emphasized that this strategy is beneficial for the players and strengthens the community by showcasing sports as a viable route to success. “Many of the boys who play for the rugby club were previously unemployed, and rugby has provided them with an opportunity to gain meaningful work,” he noted.
He mentioned that team members often need to play even when fire officers are unavailable on Saturdays due to their work commitments, presenting an additional challenge for the club.
This initiative not only creates pathways for individual success but also fosters a stronger sense of community, showcasing the positive impact sports can have on lives. It is a reminder that through teamwork and collective support, people can overcome obstacles and achieve their aspirations.
Summary: Bokobuka rugby club is helping players secure jobs and overseas contracts while strengthening the local community, showcasing the life-changing impact of sports.
