A rugby club in Labasa is making an impact beyond the sport by helping its players find employment opportunities. Bokobuka, a team associated with the National Fire Authority, is dedicated to assisting its athletes in securing both jobs and potential overseas contracts.
Coach Viliame Maiono highlighted the club’s initiative, stating that it focuses on fostering players’ careers both within and outside of rugby. Notably, one player has successfully landed a position with a rugby club in Australia, while eight others have been employed as auxiliary staff members within the National Fire Authority.
This dual approach not only aids the players but also strengthens the local community by showcasing sports as a viable path to success. “Many of the boys playing for the rugby club were unemployed, and the sport has provided them with job opportunities,” Mr. Maiono added. He mentioned that the team sometimes needs players to fill in, especially since fire officers may be unavailable on Saturdays due to work commitments.
This positive initiative reflects how sports organizations can play a significant role in shaping the futures of young athletes, providing them with much-needed support and opportunities to thrive.
Overall, Bokobuka’s efforts depict a hopeful narrative where sports serve not just as a recreational activity but as a gateway to career advancements and community development.
