A rugby club in Labasa is taking a proactive approach in supporting its players beyond the sport itself. The Bokobuka rugby team, associated with the National Fire Authority, is committed to helping its athletes find job opportunities and contracts to play internationally.

According to the club’s coach, Viliame Maiono, this initiative is designed to assist players in advancing their careers, both in rugby and in other professional fields. Remarkably, one player has secured a position with a club in Australia, while eight others have obtained jobs as auxiliary staff with the National Fire Authority.

Maiono emphasized that this strategy not only benefits the individual players but also strengthens the community by highlighting sports as a viable pathway to success. He noted, “Some of the boys playing for the rugby club were jobless, and they have been given an opportunity for jobs. Rugby has given them an opportunity to work.”

Additionally, the club has faced challenges with player availability during matches since fire officers may be preoccupied with work commitments on Saturdays, prompting the decision to help players balance their rugby commitments with employment.

This initiative serves as a testament to the profound impact sports can have on individuals and communities, fostering not just athletic excellence but also economic and personal development. By creating avenues for employment, the Bokobuka rugby team is helping to transform lives and build a promising future for its players.

In summary, the Bokobuka rugby club stands out not only for its athletic pursuits but also for its dedication to empowering players through job opportunities, reflecting a positive example of community engagement in sports.
