King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting currently taking place there. The royal couple received a warm welcome in Apia on Wednesday night from Samoan Prime Minister and local leaders.
The previous day, King Charles and Queen Camilla participated in a Royal Ava Ceremony at the National University of Samoa, which is akin to a traditional kava ceremony, hosted by the villagers of Falelatai. The event was graced by the Samoan Head of State, Afioga i le Ao Mamalu o le Malo Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II, Masiofo Faamausili Leinafo Tuimalealiifano, and Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa, along with other Cabinet ministers.
The royals also visited the Samoa Culture Village in Matagialalua, where they were greeted by local Samoans, particularly children. During their visit, they experienced the rich Samoan traditions and customs showcased at the cultural center.
Their state visit aims to celebrate the strong bilateral relationship between Samoa and the United Kingdom, particularly in light of Samoa’s role in hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2024.
King Charles is set to engage with youth, as well as community and faith leaders, focusing on sustainability and biodiversity, which are central themes of the CHOGM, especially concerning ocean conservation. He plans to visit a mangrove forest and a National Park to observe local efforts in preserving these essential ecosystems. Additionally, he will plant a tree in Samoa’s Botanical Garden to inaugurate a new section known as ‘The King’s Garden.’
Queen Camilla’s engagements will also highlight her broader initiatives. She will visit a traditional Samoan Pastor’s School to understand how students are taught literacy. Furthermore, she plans to meet with the Samoa Victim Support Group to gain insight into the services provided to assist survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
