King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in Samoa in anticipation of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting taking place in the country. The royal couple received a warm welcome from Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa and local leaders upon their arrival in Apia on Wednesday evening.

On their first full day in Samoa, King Charles and Queen Camilla participated in a Royal Ava Ceremony—a traditional kava ceremony—held at the National University of Samoa, hosted by the villagers of Falelatai. Esteemed attendees included the Head of State of Samoa, Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II, Masiofo Faamausili Leinafo Tuimalealiifano, and various Cabinet Ministers.

In addition, the royals visited the Samoa Culture Village in Matagialalua, where they were warmly greeted by Samoan residents, particularly children. They experienced the rich traditions and customs showcased at the cultural center.

According to the Royal family’s official website, this state visit aims to celebrate the strong bilateral relationship between Samoa and the United Kingdom, highlighted by Samoa hosting CHOGM 2024. During this visit, the King will engage with youth, community members, and leaders of various faiths.

The program will emphasize themes of sustainability and biodiversity, aligning with CHOGM’s focus on promoting a resilient environment and oceanic concerns. His Majesty is set to visit a mangrove forest and a National Park to observe local community efforts in conserving these vital ecosystems. Additionally, he will plant a tree in Samoa’s Botanical Garden, inaugurating a new section to be named ‘The King’s Garden.’

Queen Camilla’s engagements will also reflect her broader work themes. She plans to visit a traditional Samoan Pastor’s School (aoga faifeau) to learn about literacy education for students. Furthermore, she will meet with the Samoa Victim Support Group, which provides assistance to survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, to better understand the crucial services offered to those in crisis.
