King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting currently taking place in the country. On Wednesday night, they were greeted with enthusiasm by the Prime Minister of Samoa and other leaders in Apia.
The day prior, the royal couple participated in a traditional Royal Ava Ceremony at the National University of Samoa, hosted by the villagers from Falelatai. This event was attended by the Samoan Head of State Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Sualauvi II, Masiofo Faamausili Leinafo Tuimalealiifano, as well as Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa and other Cabinet Ministers.
Later, King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the Samoa Culture Village in Matagialalua, where they received warm greetings from local residents, particularly children. They witnessed various authentic Samoan customs and traditions showcased at the cultural center.
This State visit aims to celebrate the strong bilateral ties between Samoa and the United Kingdom, further enhanced by Samoa’s role in hosting the upcoming CHOGM 2024. King Charles is planning to engage with youth, community, and faith leaders during his stay.
The King’s agenda will highlight themes of sustainability and biodiversity, correlating with the CHOGM focus on creating ‘A Resilient Environment’ and ocean conservation. He intends to visit a mangrove forest and a National Park to observe local community efforts in restoring these essential ecosystems. Additionally, he will plant a tree in Samoa’s Botanical Garden to inaugurate a new section designated as ‘The King’s Garden’.
Meanwhile, Queen Camilla’s itinerary will align with her broader work initiatives. She plans to visit a traditional Samoan Pastor’s School to understand the educational practices for teaching reading and writing. She will also meet with the Samoa Victim Support Group, where she will learn about their services supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
