Rotuma’s Struggle: Climate Change Threatens Livelihoods

The residents of Rotuma are increasingly at risk from climate change, which is endangering their livelihoods and untouched natural resources. Gagaj Manav Kauata Pat Samuela emphasized these concerns during the recent Great Council of Chiefs meeting held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

During his remarks, Gagaj Manav pointed out that while the island is rich in natural resources, it is facing unprecedented threats from rising sea levels and unpredictable weather conditions. He remarked, “Although we are fortunate to have untapped natural resources and a rich culture, significant challenges threaten the sustainability of our island.”

He went on to describe how climate change presents grave risks to agriculture and fisheries, vital components of the island’s economy and food security. “The resilience of our island community is being put to the test; thus, we must confront these issues with urgency and innovative solutions, even though many factors are beyond our control,” he noted.

As a spokesperson for the council, Gagaj Manav stressed the importance of implementing sustainable development practices to enhance climate resilience. He expressed a collective commitment, stating, “We, the chiefs of Rotuma and our people, are dedicated to joining forces with the Great Council of Chiefs, our government, and our community to combat the threats to our identity and the well-being of our people, both today and in the future.”
