Minister for Public Works, Transportation and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau has revealed that poor road conditions in Lau are preventing some schoolchildren from attending classes. During a recent visit to the Lau Group, which included stops at Lakeba, Cicia, and Vanuabalavu, he addressed pressing concerns related to infrastructure, power supply, and road conditions.
Ro Filipe noted, “The roads are a significant issue, and as a result, some children are unable to reach school.” He highlighted that seawater intrusion in certain areas is exacerbating the problem, particularly during high tide when access is further restricted.
The minister indicated that his ministry is collaborating with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and the Ministry of Waterways to address sea walls and the deteriorating condition of the Lomaloma jetty in Vanuabalavu. “Vanuabalavu faces critical challenges with its roads and jetty, making it a major focus for us,” he said.
He also mentioned existing problems with the power supply and the need to reassess the jetty, which currently poses safety risks for passengers due to its unserviceable state. Ro Filipe emphasized the urgency of these issues and urged the FRA to accelerate their efforts to ensure the safety and mobility of the Lau community.
