Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently on a two-day visit to Fiji’s Northern Division to assess the proposed road upgrades under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. He is accompanied by Robert Lee, Fiji’s Ambassador to China.
This significant project is made possible through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), with an estimated investment of FJD $300 million. During his visit, Rabuka stressed the need for local community involvement to ensure that the road improvements not only enhance connectivity but also create employment opportunities during the construction phase.
The Prime Minister inspected key sections of the project, including 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road from Bua to Nasolo and 35 kilometers of the Nabalebale to Dogoru route on the Wailevu West Coast. Accompanying him was Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, who provided valuable insights into the project’s technical and logistical considerations.
The visit included a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Jovesa Naqarikau, which detailed the region’s economic potential that stands to be significantly enhanced through improved road infrastructure. Ambassador Lee voiced his approval of the project, highlighting its importance in reinforcing infrastructure and fostering regional growth. He noted that the upgraded roads are expected to support vital sectors like tourism and renewable energy initiatives, including hydropower, and improve access for rural communities.
This project represents a positive step towards enhancing connectivity in Fiji’s Northern Division, with the potential for significant economic growth and development in the region. As local input is prioritized, there is hope for sustainable benefits that extend well beyond the immediate roadworks, fostering a stronger community and infrastructure for the future.
