An elderly man has tragically lost his life in a traffic incident, while another driver has been hospitalized following a collision that caused their vehicles to veer off the road and land in a ditch. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, both drivers were attempting to overtake each other when the accident occurred.
Emergency services rushed the two drivers to Navua Hospital, where the 80-year-old man from Suva was pronounced dead, while the other driver is reported to be in stable condition. SSP Divuana expressed concern over the rising number of road accidents and fatalities in recent days, with three fatalities reported in the past eight days, including serious accidents involving pedestrians.
In a separate incident in Wainadoi, Navua, another fatal accident was reported, emphasizing the urgent need for road safety measures. SSP Divuana highlighted the issue of speeding, which continues to contribute to accidents despite ongoing public awareness campaigns, including billboards and social media efforts aimed at encouraging safer driving.
He also pointed out problematic pedestrian behavior and urged parents and guardians to model safe road practices for their children, reinforcing the idea that road safety should be a shared responsibility. Notably, the national road death toll currently stands at 48, a significant decrease compared to 78 during the same period last year, suggesting that ongoing awareness and preventative measures are making a positive impact.
This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety for all users. By continuing to emphasize and practice safety measures, we can contribute to a future where such accidents are minimized, and every individual on the road remains protected.
