Ketan Lal, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has expressed serious concerns regarding the poor condition of the road next to Savusavu Airport. Lal, a local resident, pointed out that this vital route has been reduced from a tar-sealed surface to gravel by the road authorities, leading to a rise in accidents and creating significant dust problems for both drivers and local residents.
He emphasized that this issue signifies not only a disregard for infrastructure but also calls into question the priorities and financial management of the Coalition Government. Lal mentioned, “Savusavu is a bustling tourism destination, attracting visitors from across the globe who wish to experience its distinctive beauty and charm. The airport serves as one of only two airstrips enabling air travel to the island. Thus, the condition of the road leading to this vital entry point is of national significance.”
He highlighted the importance of having a smooth, safe, and dependable road to bolster the tourism industry, which plays a crucial role in the economy and provides livelihoods for many Fijians. According to Lal, the conversion of this road to gravel has resulted in serious repercussions. The increased frequency of accidents endangers the safety of citizens, and the dust produced by passing vehicles poses health risks and disrupts the lives of nearby residents.
“This is not just a minor inconvenience; it is a significant failure to deliver safe and dependable infrastructure, which is a fundamental obligation of any government,” he added. Lal is demanding answers from the Fiji Roads Authority regarding this decision and questioning whether they have sufficient funds to maintain the roads effectively.
He noted that “the money spent by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on a lavish dinner could have been better used to reseal this crucial road, offering tangible benefits to the community instead of short-lived luxury.” Lal characterized the situation as indicative of misplaced priorities and a lack of accountability. He stated that the government’s role is to serve the public by ensuring their safety and welfare. Neglecting key infrastructure like roads demonstrates a lack of commitment to these responsibilities.
Lal urged the government to take immediate action by allocating necessary funds to the Fiji Roads Authority for the road’s resealing, stressing that this isn’t just about repairing a roadway but about restoring public trust in leadership and showing commitment to the welfare of all Fijians.
