Ketan Lal, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has expressed serious concerns regarding the poor condition of the road leading to Savusavu Airport. Lal, who hails from the region, noted that this critical stretch has been downgraded from a tar-sealed surface to gravel by the road authorities. This change has led to a rise in accidents and excessive dust, negatively impacting both drivers and local residents.
He emphasized that the matter underscores not only infrastructure neglect but also raises questions about the Coalition Government’s priorities and financial management. Lal pointed out that Savusavu is a key tourism destination, attracting global visitors eager to explore its unique offerings. The airport serves as one of two airstrips facilitating passenger travel to the island, making the road that leads to it a concern of national significance.
“Having a smooth, safe, and dependable road is crucial for supporting the tourism industry, which is integral to our economy and provides many Fijians with their livelihoods,” he stated. Lal warned that the switch to a gravel surface has led to dangerous consequences, with an uptick in accidents posing risks to public safety, while the dust generated by vehicles presents health hazards and inconveniences for nearby residents.
“This situation not only poses an inconvenience but highlights a significant failure to deliver safe and reliable infrastructure, which is a fundamental obligation of any government,” he added. Lal is calling for answers from the Fiji Roads Authority about why this decision was made and questioned whether they have the necessary funds for proper road maintenance.
He criticized the funds spent by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on a lavish dinner, suggesting that such expenses could have been better allocated toward repaving this vital roadway, thereby benefiting the community instead of indulging in temporary luxuries.
“This reflects a misalignment of priorities and a lack of accountability. The government’s responsibility is to serve the people and ensure their safety and well-being. When essential infrastructure like roads is neglected, it demonstrates a failure to uphold these duties,” Lal remarked.
He urged the government to promptly resolve this issue by allocating the necessary funds to the Fiji Roads Authority for the road’s resealing. “This is not merely a matter of fixing a road; it involves restoring trust in our leadership and affirming a commitment to the welfare of all Fijians,” he concluded.
