Ketan Lal, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has expressed serious concerns regarding the poor condition of the road adjacent to Savusavu Airport. Lal, a local resident, pointed out that this vital roadway has been downgraded from a tar-sealed surface to gravel by road authorities. This change has led to a rise in accidents and significant dust pollution, affecting both motorists and nearby inhabitants.
Lal emphasized that this situation not only underscores the neglect of infrastructure but also raises critical questions about the priorities and financial management of the Coalition Government.
“Savusavu is a vibrant tourism destination, drawing visitors from around the globe who come to enjoy its distinctive beauty and charm. The airport serves as one of only two airstrips that facilitate air travel to the island. Therefore, the condition of the road leading to this key entry point is not solely a local concern; it holds national significance,” he stated.
Lal argued that a smooth, secure, and dependable road is essential for supporting the tourism sector, which plays a crucial role in the economy and provides livelihoods for many Fijians.
“The conversion of this road to gravel has severe implications. The rise in accidents threatens the safety of our citizens, while the dust stirred up by passing vehicles poses health risks and is a nuisance for local residents,” he added.
He described the situation as not just an inconvenience but as a significant failure to provide safe and reliable infrastructure, a fundamental responsibility of any government. Lal is demanding explanations from the Fiji Roads Authority regarding this decision and has questioned whether they have sufficient funds for proper road maintenance.
“The money spent by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on a lavish dinner could have been used to upgrade this crucial road, offering real benefits to the community instead of fleeting indulgences,” he noted.
Lal criticized what he sees as misplaced priorities and a lack of accountability, asserting that the government’s duty is to serve the people and ensure their safety and well-being. He urged the government to urgently provide the necessary funds to the Fiji Roads Authority for the resealing of the road next to Savusavu Airport. “This issue is not just about repairing a road; it’s about restoring trust in our leadership and reaffirming our commitment to the welfare of all Fijians,” he concluded.
