Road to Disaster: Savusavu’s Infrastructure Crisis Raises Eyebrows

Ketan Lal, an opposition Member of Parliament, has expressed serious concerns regarding the poor condition of the road adjacent to Savusavu Airport. Lal, who hails from the area, highlighted that this vital road has been downgraded from tar-sealed pavement to gravel by road authorities, leading to a rise in accidents and excessive dust that impacts both drivers and local residents.

Lal noted that this issue not only reflects a lack of infrastructure maintenance but also brings into question the priorities and financial management of the Coalition Government. He emphasized that Savusavu is a key tourism destination, drawing visitors globally who wish to experience its unique beauty. The airport serves as one of only two airstrips facilitating air travel to the island, making the condition of the access road a significant national issue.

He stated, “A smooth, safe, and reliable road is crucial for our tourism sector, which plays an essential role in our economy and provides jobs for many Fijians.” Lal pointed out that the transformation of the road into gravel has led to serious consequences, including an uptick in road accidents and health hazards from dust for nearby residents.

“This is not just an inconvenience; it indicates a critical failure to provide safe and dependable infrastructure, a fundamental duty of any Government,” he remarked. Lal is demanding the Fiji Roads Authority justify their decision and has questioned whether they are adequately funded to maintain the roads.

He criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for using funds on a lavish dinner that could have been directed towards resealing this crucial road, which would benefit the community instead of serving temporary indulgences. Lal called the situation a sign of misplaced priorities and accountability issues, stressing that the Government must prioritize the safety and well-being of the population.

He urged the government to promptly tackle this issue by allocating the necessary resources to the Fiji Roads Authority for repairing the road beside Savusavu Airport. “This is not merely about fixing a road; it is about restoring public trust in our leadership and showing a commitment to all Fijians’ welfare,” Lal concluded.
