Road Safety Warning: 603 Lives Lost to Avoidable Accidents

A total of 603 individuals have tragically lost their lives due to road accidents in Fiji. This alarming statistic was shared by Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic for the Fiji Police Force, during the closing ceremony of the National Road Safety Week at the FMF Hibiscus Festival.

The fatalities recorded span from 2014 to the present. SSP Divuana emphasized that these victims left behind families and dreams, their lives cut short by accidents that were often preventable. He highlighted that many accidents were the result of poor decision-making and a lack of respect for others’ right to safety on the roads.

He noted that the statistics reflect a broad range of victims, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and riders, underlining the vulnerability of all road users to accidents and fatalities. SSP Divuana stressed the importance of changing attitudes and mindsets regarding road safety, urging adults to set a positive example for children to foster a culture of safety on the roads.
