Over the past year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has revoked 114 driver’s licenses and suspended 13 others, according to Acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa.
As of August 27, the total number of road fatalities has reached 38, a significant decrease from the 62 reported during the same period last year.
Despite the reduction, Rokosawa emphasized that the loss of any life is unacceptable. The LTA, in partnership with the Fiji Police Force and other crucial stakeholders, remains dedicated to its mission of reducing road fatalities and ensuring the safety of all Fijians on the roads.
“Road fatalities are frequently the tragic result of preventable actions such as speeding, drunk driving, pedestrian negligence, and other irresponsible driving behaviors,” he said.
Rokosawa highlighted that each statistic represents a life lost, leading the LTA to intensify its efforts during National Road Safety Week to promote awareness regarding adherence to road safety rules.
“The Authority’s road safety education and enforcement teams have been diligently working around the clock to spread the safety message throughout our communities,” he stated.
Through community outreach programs, educational initiatives, and strict enforcement measures, these teams are emphasizing that road safety is a collective responsibility shared by everyone who uses the roads—whether as pedestrians, passengers, or drivers.
He noted that the National Road Safety Week campaign serves as an essential platform to unite all stakeholders in the effort to combat road accidents.
In collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, the LTA is focusing on raising awareness about the consequences of unsafe driving practices and the significance of shared responsibility in road safety.
While education and awareness are vital components of the LTA’s strategy, Rokosawa asserted that enforcement is also crucial in deterring reckless driving behavior. The Authority remains committed to holding offenders accountable through its showcause process.
