Road Safety Alert: Fiji’s Surging Accident Rate Raises Concerns

This year, Fiji has seen a concerning increase in serious road accidents, with a total of 13 incidents recorded. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, Director of Traffic and Transport Control, voiced significant concern over this trend, particularly as the new school year approaches, which is expected to bring increased traffic to the roads.

Most alarming is that 11 of the 13 reported accidents involved drivers losing control of their vehicles, primarily due to speeding and fatigue. SSP Divuana urged drivers to take proactive measures to enhance safety, including planning their trips effectively, taking breaks during long journeys, and avoiding the temptation to rush. “Safety must be your top concern,” he emphasized, calling for a collective effort from the public to prioritize road safety.

On a positive note, Fiji has not recorded any fatalities from road accidents so far this year, a marked improvement compared to the two fatalities in the same period last year. This statistic has sparked hope that the continuous efforts by the Fiji Police and community road safety campaigns are beginning to impact driver behavior positively.

The Fiji Police Force remains committed to enhancing road safety through regular traffic checks, reinforcing the importance of responsible driving, and encouraging drivers to stop at Community Posts along highways to take necessary breaks. This initiative underscores the crucial need for vigilance as the school year starts and traffic volume increases.

In summary, while the rising number of serious accidents raises serious concerns, the absence of fatalities offers a hopeful indication of improving road safety in Fiji. Continued cooperation between the police and the community can foster a safer driving environment, ultimately benefitting everyone who travels on Fiji’s roads. With a shared commitment to safety, there is potential for further reductions in accidents, paving the way for a brighter and more secure future on the roads.
