Between January and November 15 of this year, a total of 272 drivers have been arrested for driving under the influence. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic, emphasized the serious dangers that drinking and driving present to all individuals on the road.
SSP Divuana highlighted that these arrests reflect the reckless behavior of drivers who endanger not only themselves but also innocent road users. He urged a change in mindset regarding road safety as the festive season approaches.
“Choosing to drink and drive or excessively consume alcohol increases the likelihood of accidents, injury, or even death, as it impairs your ability to concentrate and coordinate,” SSP Divuana stated. He also pointed out that the holiday season is typically marked by celebrations that often involve alcohol, making it imperative for every road user—drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike—to prioritize safety measures.
As the festive period nears, there is hope that increased awareness and personal responsibility will lead to safer roads for everyone. By adopting proactive road safety practices, communities can work together to prevent further tragedies and ensure a safer environment for all during this celebratory time.
In summary, SSP Divuana is calling for a collective effort towards road safety, reinforcing that everyone shares the responsibility to ensure both their safety and that of others during the upcoming festive season.
