Riya Bhagwan, a 20-year-old aspiring journalist from Nadi, is driven by her desire to connect with grassroots communities and advocate for the vulnerable populations in her area. Currently a second-year student at the University of the South Pacific, Riya is pursuing a dual degree in journalism and social work.

Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, with her parents running an electronics and spice trade business, Riya’s initial exposure to journalism came through daily newspapers and evening news broadcasts that her family followed. However, her passion for the field ignited during her time at Sangam SKM College, where she participated in public speaking and took on leadership roles, leading her to realize her aversion to a sedentary office job.

Inspiration also comes from her grandfather, Mr. Bharat Morris, a former reporter for the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation. His stories about the demanding and dynamic nature of journalism fueled Riya’s enthusiasm for the profession.

Reflecting on her education so far, Riya highlighted the importance of practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge for aspiring journalists. She enjoys participating in fieldwork, such as writing stories and conducting interviews, which has strengthened her dedication to journalism.

Looking ahead, Riya aims to focus on issues related to women, children, and marginalized communities in Fiji. Studying social work has heightened her awareness of ongoing inequalities, and she is particularly interested in investigative journalism to shed light on underlying social issues.

Despite the competitive nature of the local media industry, Riya is undeterred. She acknowledges the pressure journalists face to meet strict deadlines, which can sometimes compromise the accuracy of reporting. However, she views these challenges as opportunities to build resilience within the field.

Riya believes that a career in journalism should be driven by passion rather than the allure of fame or financial gain. She encourages young journalists to remain committed to their principles of fairness and balance, emphasizing that they can indeed make a positive impact on their communities through their work.

In summary, Riya Bhagwan represents a new generation of journalists committed to social advocacy and community engagement. Her story serves as a reminder of the essential role journalists play in society, particularly in illuminating the struggles of the most vulnerable. With her determination and passion, Riya is poised to make significant contributions to the field of journalism in Fiji. Her journey is a beacon of hope for aspiring journalists everywhere, encouraging them to follow their dreams and advocate for change.
