Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently addressed the alarming issue of diabetes and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Fiji, sharing his personal experiences with the devastating impact these health issues have on families. Speaking at the launch of the Diabetes Campaign 2024 in Suva, he emphasized the urgency for Fijians to prioritize their health.

Rabuka reflected on his family’s struggles, particularly the loss of loved ones to diabetes, including his mother’s gradual loss of sight due to the disease. He recounted that she became blind in 1963 and passed away in 1992, underscoring the personal toll of these conditions. The Prime Minister highlighted that in 2020 alone, Fiji experienced around 5,700 deaths attributed to NCDs, a figure he found deeply concerning.

Around 80% of deaths in the country are linked to diabetes and other NCDs, with the numbers continuing to rise. Rabuka pointed out that people of all ages, from children to the elderly, are at risk due to factors such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption. He noted that many lives are lost to heart disease, diabetes, strokes, and various cancers, stressing the widespread nature of these health issues.

The Prime Minister’s stories illustrate the pressing reality of NCDs that affect all societal levels, urging a collective effort to confront the growing health crisis. Rabuka called for a cultural shift towards healthier living, advocating for education, preventive measures, and community involvement.

He mentioned the crucial roles that schools, workplaces, and healthcare facilities play in fostering healthier habits, including balanced diets and regular exercise. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of early detection and management of diabetes through regular health screenings, which can allow for timely interventions.

Rabuka’s heartfelt message serves as a powerful call to action for Fijians to take control of their health. He highlighted the need for a united front in the battle against diabetes and NCDs, encouraging all citizens to actively participate in creating a healthier future for their communities.
