Rising Tide of Violent Crime: Disturbing Trends Revealed

The Director of Public Prosecutions has reported that a 55-year-old man has been charged with intentionally causing grievous harm to his 5-year-old stepdaughter. The accused allegedly injured the child by striking her back with a cane knife.

This incident is part of the ODPP’s Serious Crime (Non-Sexual Violence Offences) Statistics for August 2024, which indicate that 18 individuals faced charges totaling 28 non-sexual violence offences during that month. The report noted that there were 14 victims involved in these cases, and in six instances, the accused were related to the victims.

Additionally, a 48-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his 76-year-old father, allegedly stabbing him multiple times, resulting in the father’s death. A 33-year-old man was also charged with an act intending to cause grievous harm to his 34-year-old domestic partner, having allegedly wounded her with a spade; he faces additional charges for violating a domestic violence restraining order and breaching a suspended sentence.

A separate case involves a 34-year-old man who was charged with grievous harm and attempted arson after allegedly injuring his 39-year-old brother with a spade and attempting to set his brother’s home on fire. Furthermore, a 25-year-old man has been charged with causing grievous harm to a 48-year-old man, reportedly involving a physical altercation.

In another incident, a 44-year-old man faces charges of assault causing actual bodily harm to his de facto partner, alongside charges of aggravated burglary and criminal intimidation. The alleged offences led to the theft of cash and various items from break-ins at homes and shops, as well as street muggings both day and night.

Additionally, four men aged 24, 34, 20, and 19 were charged with aggravated robbery, having allegedly stolen a mobile phone from a 14-year-old boy. A 31-year-old man was charged with unlawful cultivation and possession of illicit drugs after allegedly cultivating 94 cannabis plants and possessing over 3 kilograms of cannabis. In a similar case, a 30-year-old man has been charged with unlawfully cultivating 347 cannabis plants.
