In the picturesque sugarcane plantations of Fiji, the emergence of a new leadership figure is gaining attention. Meet Nemai Diloma, a dynamic young woman making strides as a Roving Sector Assistant with the Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) in Nadi. Her journey is more than a personal achievement; it embodies the strength, determination, and contributions of women in agriculture, reshaping this vital industry.

At just 26 years old, Nemai is already leaving her imprint on the sugar sector. She graduated from Fiji National University (FNU) with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and ignited her passion for the industry after joining FSC earlier this year.

“I view this role as a fantastic opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in school while gaining practical experience in an industry that is key to Fiji’s economy,” she shared. In her position as a Roving Sector Assistant, Nemai provides support to sugarcane farmers from planting through to harvesting, showcasing her dedication to high-quality sugar production through her proactive engagement with growers.

“I enjoy collaborating with the farmers; every day presents new challenges and chances to learn,” she noted. Despite facing challenges such as language barriers and operating within a male-dominated environment, Nemai’s resilience and flexibility have been vital to her success.

“By being open to learning, I’ve enhanced my communication skills, which are crucial for developing strong relationships with our growers,” she explained. Recently, Nemai took on a leadership role by guiding a group of farmers through a demanding planting season, underscoring her capabilities as a leader.

A pivotal experience for Nemai occurred when she stepped in during a colleague’s absence, solidifying her belief in women’s ability to thrive in leadership roles within agriculture. Her team successfully navigated the planting season, a testament to her leadership.

Nemai expresses gratitude for the mentorship she has received at FSC, emphasizing how it has contributed to her professional development. The support from her colleagues has been instrumental to her progress, highlighting the significance of a nurturing work environment for women’s empowerment.

“The guidance I’ve received has been vital. Teamwork, timeliness, and commitment are essential for reaching our objectives in the sugar industry,” she stressed. Looking toward the future, Nemai is optimistic about the growing presence of women in agriculture, viewing it as a transformative force and a beacon of hope for the sector’s future.

“The sugar industry offers limitless opportunities for women, but it requires commitment and the courage to venture beyond your comfort zone,” she advised, offering encouragement to those aspiring to follow in her path.

Nemai’s experience serves as a motivating call for women to take charge of their careers and drive meaningful change in the industry.

“I truly believe that women are capable of leading and innovating in agriculture, and I take pride in being part of this progressive movement,” she concluded, inspiring other women to step up and leave their mark on the sugar industry.
