The first leg of the Fiji Sports Council’s Under 20 Sevens Rugby Tournament took place at Thomson Park in Navua yesterday, featuring 16 men’s teams and six women’s teams competing in this one-day event.
Tournament director Tiko Matawalu highlighted the importance of providing a dedicated platform for under-20 players, who typically find themselves overshadowed in larger competitions. He emphasized that this tournament allows young athletes to step into the spotlight and showcase their abilities.
Matawalu expressed gratitude towards the Fiji Sports Council for organizing the event, which gives young male and female rugby players the opportunity to compete in a setting designed specifically for them. He noted the importance of support from Fiji Rugby and the enthusiasm from parents and guardians, stating that this support enhances the players’ experience and comfort on the field.
This tournament not only highlights the talents of young athletes but also fosters community involvement and support for the growth of rugby in Fiji. As these players take center stage, they are given the chance to cultivate their skills and possibly inspire the next generation of rugby stars.
Overall, the event serves as a hopeful reminder of the dedication and talent within Fiji’s rugby community, paving the way for young athletes to shine and develop in their sporting journeys.
