For many teenagers, high school revolves around friendships, academics, and aspirations. However, for 16-year-old Rafaele Tuikitai Waqalala, a Year 10 student at Swami Vivekananda College in Nadi, his dreams are accompanied by a definitive plan and steadfast commitment.

Recently, Rafaele earned a spot among the 29 players chosen for the Fijian Drua Academy, and he has set his sights on wearing the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua jersey within the next five years. Originating from Batiri village in Macuata and with family ties in Korovuto, Nadi, Rafaele exemplifies how hard work, discipline, and a solid support network can help achieve even the most ambitious goals.

“I thank the Drua management for trusting me to be part of this academy,” Rafaele expressed. “My aim now is to work hard and wear the Drua jersey in five years’ time.” His dedication to rugby is deeply ingrained, influenced by his family and traditions. As the third child in his family, he understands the importance of determination and perseverance, especially with the encouragement of his cousin, Mesake Vocevoce, who is a lock player for the Fijian Drua.

“Mesake has been an inspiring role model for me,” Rafaele remarked. “I know I have to do my best, stay disciplined, and follow my coaches’ advice. I will work hard.”

Being selected for the academy marks a significant step in Rafaele’s professional rugby journey, symbolizing not only his talent but also the backing from his family and village. This dream, which he has cherished since childhood, feels increasingly attainable, thanks to his dedication and the resources provided by the Fijian Drua Academy.

With the support of his community behind him, Rafaele’s determination is propelling him toward his aspirations, motivated by the desire to represent Fiji on an international stage and make his family, village, and school proud.

In summary, Rafaele’s journey highlights the power of hard work and community support in the pursuit of dreams. It serves as an inspiring reminder that with focus and motivation, young athletes can make significant strides toward achieving their goals, especially in a sport as beloved as rugby in Fiji. This story is not just about individual ambition; it’s a celebration of collective efforts and dreams that communities nurture.
