Asilika Rinieta Qalo is set to represent the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team as they prepare for the upcoming Dubai 7s tournament. At just 22 years old and hailing from Nadogo, Saqani with family ties in Nakobo, Cakaudrove, Qalo is among the new faces hoping to make an impact on the field.
Reflecting on her journey, Qalo expressed gratitude for her selection into the national extended squad, acknowledging the challenges she faced after only starting her rugby career two years ago with the Police rugby team before moving to Nasinu. “I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection,” she stated, sharing how wearing the national colors has always been a dream for her despite the obstacles encountered along the way.
She described the rigorous training regimen in a high-performance environment as demanding but emphasized the importance of her support system, which has been vital in motivating her. “A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself,” Qalo admitted, emphasizing her determination as she approaches her national duties with enthusiasm.
Qalo, who also attended Nabua Secondary School and plays club netball, is now ready to take on this exciting opportunity. The Fijiana 7s team, with Qalo among them, will depart for Dubai this weekend and will compete in Pool A against strong teams including Australia, Ireland, and China.
This moment marks a significant step for both Qalo and the Fijiana 7s team, showcasing the potential and talent emerging in women’s rugby in Fiji. As they head into the tournament, there is a shared hope for success and a bright future for these athletes.
In summary, Qalo’s story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes, demonstrating that dreams can be realized through hard work and determination.
