Asilika Rinieta Qalo is poised to represent the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s team as they head into the Dubai 7s next weekend. The 22-year-old from Nadogo, Saqani, with connections to Nakobo in Cakaudrove, is one of the new, uncapped players eager to secure their place in the lineup.
Reflecting on her journey, Qalo shared that achieving a spot in the national extended squad was no easy feat. She began her rugby career just two years ago with the Police rugby team before moving on to play for Nasinu.
“Thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection,” Qalo expressed. “Wearing the national colors has long been my dream, but it has not been an easy road.” The rigorous demands of daily training in a high-performance environment required significant dedication, including early morning practices. However, she credits her support system for keeping her motivated throughout the challenges she faced.
“I received a lot of encouragement and advice to stay humble,” Qalo noted. “I didn’t expect to be selected, but I’m now fully prepared for national duties.” In addition to her rugby aspirations, Qalo is also a student at Nabua Secondary School and actively participates in club netball.
The Fijiana 7s team will depart this weekend for Dubai and will compete in Pool A alongside formidable teams, including Australia, Ireland, and China.
Looking ahead, Qalo’s story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes, highlighting that with hard work and a strong support network, dreams can indeed become a reality.
In summary, a young player’s story of determination and optimism shines as she steps into the national spotlight, reflecting the spirit of resilience and ambition in Fiji’s sports community.
