Rising Star: Pinak Brown’s Journey from Rabi Island to Academic Success

Pinak Brown, a 22-year-old from Rabi Island, is making significant strides at The University of the South Pacific (USP). Driven by determination and a passion for learning, she is forging a path in the realms of science and education.

Originally from Cakaudrove, Vanua Levu, Brown completed her Year 13 at Napuka Secondary School. Her transition to USP marks a crucial step toward achieving her future ambitions. Embracing the challenge of moving from the familiar environment of Rabi Island to the bustling city life in Suva, she found strong support in her family.

Currently in her third year at USP’s Laucala Campus, Brown is pursuing a Bachelor of Science and Graduate Certificate in Education with majors in Mathematics and Physics. Her choice to attend university was motivated by a desire to expand her social network and to follow in the footsteps of several family members who are also USP graduates.

Like many new students, she faced challenges such as peer pressure but successfully navigated these by connecting with positive peers and fellow students in similar academic programs. Her enthusiasm for science is complemented by her belief that it can coexist with religious principles, an idea she plans to explore further as she embarks on her teaching career.

“My favorite part of studying is the science component; I genuinely believe science and religion are harmonious and interconnected. I look forward to elaborating on this in my future career as a teacher,” Brown stated.

Her commitment to her studies is seen in her frequent visits to the library and IT labs during her free time. She encourages both current and prospective USP students to take advantage of university resources like scholarships and career workshops. Brown highlighted the value of the library, IT facilities, and Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) led by Student Learning Support services, which have greatly benefited her academic experience.

“PASS has been a tremendous academic support system for me, as classes are run by high-achieving students who have excelled in those courses previously. This has significantly boosted my performance,” she noted.

Brown first learned about PASS through recommendations when she found herself struggling academically in her first year. Since attending sessions for Maths and Physics, she has shown significant improvement.

Her journey exemplifies the strength of perseverance and the supportive environment at USP. As she continues her studies, her ambition to positively influence future generations as a teacher is evident.
