Rising Star: Pinak Brown’s Inspiring Journey at USP

Pinak Brown, a 22-year-old student from Rabi Island, is making significant strides at The University of the South Pacific (USP). Her determination and eagerness to learn are propelling her towards success in the fields of science and education.

Originally from Cakaudrove, Vanua Levu, Brown completed her Year 13 at Napuka Secondary School before embarking on her academic journey at USP. Transitioning from the tranquil Rabi Island to the bustling city life of Suva posed challenges, but with her family’s support, she faced them with resilience.

Brown is currently in her third year at USP’s Laucala Campus, pursuing a Bachelor of Science and Graduate Certificate in Education with specializations in Mathematics and Physics. Her choice to enroll at the university was motivated by the desire to expand her social network and to follow in the footsteps of her family members who have graduated from USP.

Like many newcomers, Brown experienced peer pressure in her first year but managed to overcome it by seeking out positive influences and connecting with fellow students who share her academic interests. Her enthusiasm for science, combined with her belief in its alignment with religion, drives her studies.

“The highlight of my program is studying science. I understand that science and religion can coexist harmoniously, and I hope to elaborate on this concept when I enter my future teaching career,” Brown expressed.

Her commitment to her studies is apparent in how she spends her free time, often found in the library or IT labs. She encourages current and prospective students at USP to take advantage of the scholarships and career workshops available at the university. “USP’s facilities, especially the library, IT labs, and Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) provided by Student Learning Support services, have greatly aided my academic journey,” she stated.

Brown emphasized the importance of PASS in her academic success, noting that the sessions are led by high-achieving students who have excelled in their courses. “I learned about PASS during my first year when I was struggling. Since I started attending sessions for Maths and Physics, my performance has improved remarkably,” she highlighted.

Her journey is a powerful reminder of the impact of perseverance and the support system available at USP. As she continues her education, Brown is dedicated to positively influencing future generations as a teacher.
