Rising Star: Pinak Brown’s Inspiring Academic Journey at USP

Pinak Brown, a 22-year-old from Rabi Island, is making significant strides at The University of the South Pacific (USP). Driven by determination and a passion for learning, she is on a journey toward success in the fields of science and education.

Originally from Cakaudrove, Vanua Levu, where she finished her Year 13 education at Napuka Secondary School, Brown’s enrollment at USP marks a pivotal step in her quest for future achievements. Transitioning from the familiar environment of Rabi Island to the bustling city life in Suva presented challenges, but she approached them with resilience, bolstered by her family’s support.

Currently in her third year at USP’s Laucala Campus, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science and a Graduate Certificate in Education (BSc GCED), specializing in Mathematics and Physics. Her choice to attend university was driven by a desire to expand her social connections and emulate the academic success of family members who previously graduated from USP.

Like many students, she encountered peer pressure in her first year, but she navigated this challenge by surrounding herself with positive peers and engaging with classmates in similar academic tracks. Brown’s enthusiasm for science is intertwined with her belief that it coexists harmoniously with religion, which motivates her studies.

“My favorite part of studying my program is science. I believe that science and religion are connected and in harmony. I look forward to exploring this further as I prepare for my future career as a teacher,” Brown explained.

Her commitment to her education is clear, as she dedicates her free time to studying in the library and IT labs. She encourages both current and prospective USP students to take full advantage of opportunities such as scholarships and career workshops. “The university’s resources, particularly the library, IT labs, and Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) facilitated by Student Learning Support services, have been crucial to my academic success here,” she shared.

Brown highlighted the benefits of PASS, which pairs students with high-achieving peers who have excelled in the same courses. “I learned about PASS through word-of-mouth when I was struggling in my first year. Since joining the sessions for Maths and Physics, my performance has significantly improved.”

Her experience underscores the effectiveness of perseverance and the supportive environment at USP. As she continues her academic path, Brown’s ambition to positively influence future generations as a teacher stands out.
