The Fijian Drua has officially signed Vodafone Deans standout Maleli Nauvasi to its Development program. The talented centre from Queen Victoria School was instrumental in leading his team to victory in the premier (U-18) title at the Deans competition in 2024. Nauvasi showcased his skills as the player of the match during the final against Nasinu Secondary School.

This signing is part of the Fijian Drua’s renewed commitment to identifying exceptional local talent early and paving their way to potentially join the Super Rugby Pacific squad. Hailing from Dratabu in Nadi, Nauvasi also represented the Fiji Schoolboys U18, where he participated in two matches against the Australian Schoolboys U18 last week, contributing with a try and an assist.

Throughout his career, Nauvasi has played for QVS in the Deans competition from the U14 to U18 levels, displaying versatility by taking on roles at flyhalf, wing, and fullback.

Expressing his excitement, Nauvasi remarked, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.”

Ifereimi Rawaqa, Coach of Development and Skills at Fijian Drua, stated, “I’m delighted to welcome Maleli Nauvasi to our Drua Development program. He has shown exceptional promise, not only with his natural talent but also with his discipline on the field.” Rawaqa emphasized Nauvasi’s standout performances in the Deans competition and the Fiji Schoolboys U18, expressing confidence in his potential to make a significant impact in the future. “It’s a great opportunity for him to train alongside elite athletes and learn what it takes to compete at the highest level,” he added.

The Drua’s development program aims to equip young players like Nauvasi with the necessary resources, coaching, and high-performance environment to transition to professional rugby. Nauvasi will be joining 10 other young talents in the Drua Development squad. This development contract ensures that they receive a salary and the opportunity to train with the Super Rugby Pacific squad most days of the week. Additionally, development players participate in the provincial Skipper Cup alongside the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.
