Makayla Sukhu, a talented full forward for the Fiji Junior Vonu Under-17 team, aspires to emulate her mother’s success in the Australian Football League (AFL). Her mother, Vilisi Sukhu, was a member of the inaugural women’s Fiji Vonu team back in 2014, which played a significant role in inspiring Makayla to take up the sport.

Makayla expressed her enthusiasm for AFL, emphasizing that her mother was a pivotal influence in her decision to pursue the game. “I’ve always enjoyed this sport even from when I was younger,” she remarked. She believes that teamwork and endurance are fundamental aspects of AFL, stating, “This sport has really brought out key factors because AFL is different sports in one.”

In her journey, Makayla hopes to uplift her sister to also participate in AFL and is optimistic about the sport’s growth in Fiji. She described AFL as a multi-skill sport that is challenging initially but becomes rewarding with dedication. Encouraged by her mother to stay focused on her goals and support her teammates, she remains committed to her sporting endeavors.

Apart from AFL, Sukhu recently garnered attention for her achievements in chess, where she won the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title at the 45th World Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary. Competing as the youngest member and finishing with a score of 3.5 out of 7 against teams from 193 countries was a remarkable feat for her.

Additionally, Sukhu is active in netball, representing Suva Grammar School and the Lomaiviti club in the development princess grade. Balancing academics and sports can be challenging, but she appreciates how engaging in sports helps relieve stress from her school responsibilities.

With gratitude, Sukhu acknowledged her parents’ unwavering support, attributing her achievements to their encouragement and divine guidance. Her story embodies dedication, family support, and the hope for the future of sports in Fiji, encouraging young athletes to strive for success in multiple disciplines.

Overall, Makayla Sukhu’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder of how determination and support can pave the way for success in athletics, and her hopes for the growth of AFL in Fiji illustrate a promising future for the sport.
