Fiji Junior Vonu Under-17 full forward Makayla Sukhu aspires to make her mark in the sport of Australian Football League (AFL), inspired by her mother Vilisi Sukhu, a member of Fiji’s inaugural women’s AFL team in 2014.
Makayla attributes her passion for the sport to her mother’s influence, stating, “AFL is a different sport, and my mum was the main reason why I took up this sport because she represented Fiji.” The young athlete has enjoyed AFL since childhood, and she recognizes the significance of teamwork and endurance in the game.
Sukhu emphasizes that AFL encompasses multiple skills and offers a rewarding but challenging experience. “I really hope that I’ll be able to help my sister play this sport,” she expressed, showing her desire for the sport to flourish in Fiji. She describes AFL as “a multi-skill sport as it’s quite challenging at first but you’ll be able to carry through,” indicating her determination to see the sport grow.
Balancing academics and sports presents its challenges, but Sukhu believes that engaging in sports is beneficial for mental health. “Sport is good as it gives you a piece of mind and relieves your stress from other things like schoolwork,” she noted.
In addition to AFL, Sukhu recently achieved notable success at the 45th World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, where she earned the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title, contributing to her athletic credentials. She also participates in netball at Suva Grammar School and with the Lomaiviti club.
Makayla attributes her achievements to her parents’ unwavering support and is grateful for their presence in her life. “I’d also like to thank my parents for their endless support because they are always here in my corner,” she added, highlighting the importance of family support in pursuing her goals.
In a hopeful light, Sukhu represents a new generation of athletes in Fiji who are passionate about expanding the nation’s presence in emerging sports like AFL, while also thriving in their academic pursuits.
Summary: Makayla Sukhu, an ambitious athlete from Fiji, aims to excel in AFL, inspired by her mother’s journey in the sport. She balances her commitments in athletics, academics, and recently earned a WCM title in chess, showcasing her diverse talents and aspirations for sports in Fiji to expand.
