Imelda Smith, a student from Saint Joseph’s Secondary School in Savusavu with maternal ties to Tailevu, is making headlines at the Fiji Swimming Age Group Nationals held at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva. Currently in Form Six, Smith started swimming in Year Four, inspired by her cousins following her family’s relocation to Fiji.

Competing in her age group, Smith has observed a lack of competition, especially among female swimmers. Despite the challenges of balancing her academic responsibilities with her swimming training, she remains dedicated to the sport.

“It’s definitely a challenge, especially for older swimmers who also need to focus on their studies,” Smith stated. “Many people drift away from swimming because of that.” She noted that swimming has positively influenced her academic pursuits, promoting discipline and concentration. “Waking up early and remaining committed to swimming actually helps me with studying,” she explained.

At the nationals, Smith took part in three events while also preparing for her exams. She captured a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke and a gold in the 100-meter freestyle, despite the limitations in her training due to her academic commitments.

Smith encourages her peers, particularly those from Pacific islander backgrounds, to view swimming as an essential skill. “Swimming is a great way to stay active and focused. With the ocean all around us, I believe it’s vital for everyone to learn how to swim.”
