Pinak Brown, a 22-year-old from Rabi Island, is making significant strides at The University of the South Pacific (USP). With a strong desire for knowledge and determination, she is establishing a successful career in science and education.
Originating from Cakaudrove, Vanua Levu, Brown completed her Year 13 at Napuka Secondary School before embarking on her academic journey at USP. Moving from the familiar environment of Rabi Island to the bustle of Suva posed a challenge, but she embraced it with the support of her family.
Currently, Brown is in her third year at USP’s Laucala Campus, pursuing a Bachelor of Science and Graduate Certificate in Education, specializing in Mathematics and Physics. Her choice to attend the university was driven by her goal to expand her social network and follow in the footsteps of family members who have previously graduated from USP.
Like many first-year students, she faced peer pressure but managed to overcome it by associating with positive influences and others studying similar subjects. Her enthusiasm for science is further amplified by her belief in its connection to religion. “My favorite part of studying my program is science. I understand that science and religion are harmonious and interconnected, and I look forward to elaborating on this in my future career as a teacher,” Brown stated.
Her commitment to her studies is reflected in the time she dedicates to the library and IT labs. Brown encourages current and future USP students to seize opportunities such as scholarships and career workshops available at the university. She finds the resources, particularly the library, IT labs, and Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) offered by Student Learning Support services, instrumental in her academic success.
“PASS has been invaluable for me academically, as classes are led by high-achieving students who have excelled in the courses. They help improve our performance in a similar way,” she noted. Brown discovered PASS through word-of-mouth during a challenging first-year and has since attended sessions for Maths and Physics, resulting in improved academic performance.
Her journey reflects the importance of perseverance and the support system at USP. As she advances in her studies, her aspiration to create a positive impact as a future educator is evident.
